Frequently Asked Questions

Orders

Q. I recently ordered a Malaitong Tournament Takraw, and a net, how long will the delivery take?
A. Here at Sepak Takraw UK we endeavour to get your items shipped as soon as possible, we aim to get it to you via Royal Mail, recorded delivery in about 5 working days or less.

Q. I live outside the UK - Can I buy Takraw equipment from you?
A. Takraws and Takraw equipment sold by STUK can be shipped anywhere in the world. You will however incur additional delivery fees (inside the UK is free delivery) which are available on request. If we know of a reputable distributor in your country (e.g. Sepak Takraw Association of Canada) we will put you touch with them.

Q. I recently ordered and received my Training Takraw, and have found it good for practise before football matches. Is there any benefit from me getting the Tournament Takraw?
A. The Yasica Training Takraw is actually the defined specification for Professional Womens Takraw matches, The Malaitong Tournament Takraw is a little heavier and harder, but will add yet another level of skill to your practise / warm up as it has different physics to the Training Takraw.

UK Teams, Clubs, Schools

Q. I am new to Takraw. Can I put down my name somewhere to say I would like to be part of the UK Sepak Takraw team?
A. Want to play Takraw!? Thanks for the great question, we are all new to Takraw in the UK right now. Perhaps with with the exception of a few unknown guys who play privately. There are millions of potential world champs in the UK that don't know it yet. You can put your name down on this list - I am potentially interested in playing Takraw professionally We will then organise and guide people who want to learn more about sport and train with other people. We will also be forming and managing the first UK team and entering them into International competitions (which we've already received invitations to)

Q. I'd like my school to include Takraw as a sports activity as some people love Takraw but not football, some like both. Can you help?
A. Yes, please send us details about you, your school (e.g. the name of your teacher) and the UK Association will contact them to help you get started

We hope that Takraw will be in schools across the UK like they are now in Canada. http://www.takrawcanada.com

About the Sport

Q. Takraw seems to be massive in Asia, but not here, do you know where I can play it?
A. The sport is still in the early stages here in the UK. We do plan to organise matches, tournaments and other events as soon as possible. It is a good idea to add your teams, or post a forum comment to us saying you are a team / would like to form one.

Q. How many people are there usually on a Takraw Team?
A. Three people usually play on each side but doubles matches are also played

Q. How big is the Takraw Court?
A. It is the size of a doubles badminton court with the same net. You serve from the middle of your half, with the Takraw being thrown from your net/ spiker / killer player.

Q. Is Takraw a real sport or a fad like football tennis?
A. Takraw is indeed a real sport, established and flourishing in Asia, and part of the Asian games, It is also huge in Canada, and growing in Europe (see our Association Directory Many people are trying to obtain Olympic recognition. It is a great chance to enjoy and get good at a sport that you have high chances of being the best at and playing for your nation's side!

About the UK Association

Q. How long has the UK Sepak Takraw Association been running?
A. The Association was formed in 2006 with our website launched in 2009

Q. It looks like you need to be tall to play Takraw, is this true?
A. Although height has it's advantages, being small and nimble does too; most of the people who play the sport worldwide (even the pros) are not always tall. With think everyone should have a good chance of playing well.

Q. Does it help to have a Martial Arts background?
A. We believe it helps with all aspects of life to have a Martial Arts background, but it is not essential. Learning a martial art and Takraw at the same time is beneficial. They work in harmony with each other, (Most Takraw pro's probably do have martial arts experience.)

In London? For a great type of martial arts to learn, see our friend SIFU Marc or M.D. Martial Arts for more information, solutions and where to train in his style.

Training Tips

Q. I have a sore ankle bone from hitting the Takraw so much, do you have any advise?
A. Yes, wearing high boots like Converse Allstars helps protect the ankle bone. You can also try using a plaster to stick a cotton wool pad on your ankle bone and then cover with your sock.

Q. When serving the ball I struggle to get the height and speed required for a good serve. Is there anything that can help me with this?
A. It's important in Takraw that you are nimble / flexible. The main way to achieve this is to stretch regularly (as often as possible). As for additional technique and training, you could try taking up a Martial Art like Taekwondo which demands a similar physique and technique. A Takraw service is very much like a roundhouse kick. Start low and work you way up to higher strikes as you become more flexible, accurate and confident. Remember - Stretching before any sort of physical activity is important!

About the STUK Website

Q. Me and my mates love our Takraws and take them with us most places we go, some of my friends do weird stuff like juggle them etc.. Can we upload the photos to the site?
A. Yes of course! Takraw is not only a sport, but a fun skills ball and recreational. The big thing is it's a football with history. Any funny behaviour and ways of using a takraw is welcome to be documented in the forum and uploaded to the site for others to see. [NO RUDE / INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT PLEASE]
