Roll spike kick tutorial - As performed for the sport of Sepak Takraw (or Footbag Net). Please remember that although the spike is struck quite fast - It could be improved in several areas. Your comments / feedback are appreciated.
The kick being performed is on a hand-tossed footbag. The ball is small and hard to see. Please note: this is a dangerous and potentially injurious move that requires flexibility, strength, guts and practice. Do not try this move before stretching your entire body and warming up your jumping. Do not attempt on wet surfaces. Do not attempt without adequate preparation, training and supervision. If you would like to learn this move please contact the UK Association for your nearest teacher.
Here we go...
First: SPOT the Ball in the air by looking up. Keep your eye on the ball throughout the move.
Assuming the right leg is kicking, the right leg plants as upper body coils to the right for extra jumping power. The upper body uncoils, the left knee is thrust upwards as the planted leg pushes off.
To achieve maximal kicking height, lean the upper body backward while jumping, allowing the hips to elevate. Reach high and snap the kick. Be sure to follow the target all the way down to the ground. Land on the kicking leg. Cushion the landing with the hands as needed.
Practice jumping and landing on the same leg with a bent knee by turning the torso while in the air. This practice targets the landing. With a solid landing, you'll minimise the chance of injury. If you cannot land it do not try it.
Kicking height improves in stages, and is mostly a product of upper body lean. Contact point for this kick was approx. 7ft. Once you can jump and land on the same leg, find hanging leaves of a tree and begin to throw kicks at approximately head height. Work your way up inches at a time until you are satisfied with your height. Kicking speed and landings can always be improved.
Please leave feedback. As my skills improve and my kicking motion changes, I will make a better tutorial. Thanks for watching!
